Tulips and peacocks
"The tulip is a peacock among flowers:
one has no scent, the other has no song;
the one glories in its gown, the other in its train."
From the French.
"A Peacock once placed a petition before Juno desiring to have the voice of a nightingale in addition to his other attractions; but Juno refused his request.
When he persisted, and pointed out that he was her favourite bird, she said:
'Be content with your lot; one cannot be first in everything.' "
Fables of Aesop, edited by Joseph Jacobs.
"See how the Flow'rs, as at Parade,
Under their Colours stand displayed:
Each Regiment in order grows,
That of the Tulip Pinke and Rose."
Upon Appleton House, to my Lord Fairfax
